Kitchen Vastu: direction, position and stove placement

Traditionally, the best place for a kitchen is the south-east corner of the house, called Agneya, the corner linked to fire. The north-west is the usual second choice. Practitioners differ on details, so treat the directions below as the common teaching, not a fixed law.

Where should the kitchen go?

Most texts place the kitchen in the south-east, where fire is the element of the corner. The north-west is accepted when the south-east is not available, since that corner is linked to air and a gas flame is easy to keep going.

Texts such as the Mayamata and the Brihat Samhita are usually quoted for this, though schools disagree on the finer points. Many practitioners advise against a kitchen in the north-east, the south-west or the north.

Where do the stove and sink go inside the kitchen?

Inside the kitchen, the cook faces east, the stove sits on the west side of the platform and the sink goes in the north-east part, away from the stove. The usual advice is that the cook faces east while cooking, so the stove sits on the west side of the platform with the cook standing at it.

Keep the sink in the north-east part of the kitchen and well away from the stove, because water and fire are traditionally kept apart. A fridge and heavy storage are commonly placed on the south or west side.

Does a kitchen need a particular colour?

No fixed colour is set for kitchens in the rule data VastuLive uses. Light, easy-to-wipe shades are a practical choice, and a kitchen with a window and an exhaust fan is pleasanter to cook in whatever the direction.

Clear the counters, keep the stove clean and fix leaking taps. These are sensible habits in any home and also part of what practitioners ask for.

How does the kitchen fit the rest of the plan?

The kitchen is judged together with the rest of the plan. In an east-facing house the south-east corner is usually at the back right as you enter, so check where the main door sits before deciding which corner is meant.

If a room does not match

These need no building work.

  • Place the stove on the south-east side of the kitchen itself, so the flame sits in the fire corner of the room even if the kitchen is elsewhere in the house.
  • Arrange the platform so the cook faces east, and keep the sink in the north-east of the kitchen, well apart from the stove.
  • Keep the kitchen very clean and uncluttered, with a working window or exhaust fan, especially in a north-east or south-west kitchen.
  • Choose light, easy-to-clean shades for walls and tiles, and keep the heaviest storage on the south and west sides.
  • Do not move or rebuild a kitchen to fit a rule. For plumbing, gas or structural changes, ask a qualified architect or engineer.

Questions

Which direction is best for a kitchen?

Most texts prefer the south-east (Agneya), the corner linked to fire, for a kitchen. The north-west is the usual second choice. The north-east, south-west and north are traditionally avoided. Traditions differ in detail, so treat these as common teaching and check the table on this page.

Which way should I face while cooking?

The common advice is to face east while cooking. Place the stove so that this is possible when you stand at it, which usually means the stove sits on the west side of the platform. Traditions differ, so treat this as common practice and not a fixed law.

Is a north-east kitchen always bad?

Traditionally a north-east kitchen is listed as a direction to avoid, and how much it matters is a matter of belief. Practitioners suggest practical adjustments, such as placing the stove on the south-east side of the kitchen itself. Keep it clean with a working window or exhaust fan.

Where should the sink go?

Keep the sink in the north-east part of the kitchen, well away from the stove, because water and fire are traditionally kept apart. Traditions differ in detail. If the layout does not allow it, keep the sink and stove as far apart as the room permits.
