East facing house Vastu: entrance and room placement
An east-facing house has its main entrance opening to the east, which most texts prefer. The facing alone does not decide whether a house suits you. The door's position along the east side and the placement of the rooms carry more weight.

What does Vastu say about an east facing house?
Traditionally, east (Purva) is on the preferred list for a main entrance, together with the north and north-east, and the table below shows how rooms commonly sit. Many practitioners treat it as a favourable facing.
Traditions differ, and the facing is only the first step. A good facing with rooms in unsuited places still needs a closer look.
| Room | Commonly placed | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | East, north-east | Often at the front |
| Pooja room | North-east | Front corner |
| Kitchen | South-east | Also on the front side |
| Master bedroom | South-west | At the rear |
| Toilet | North-west, west-north-west, east-south-east | Away from the north-east |
Where should the main door go on the east side?
The main door goes best in a preferred part, called a pada, of the east side, because texts divide each side into parts and prefer some. On an east side, practitioners usually favour the end nearer the north-east corner.
The south-east end of the east side sits near the south-east corner, which the rule data lists as avoided for an entrance. A door at that end deserves a closer look.
Where do the rooms usually go in an east facing house?
In an east-facing plan, the pooja room, living room and kitchen sit toward the front and the master bedroom sits at the rear. The pooja room traditionally takes the north-east, and the living room can take the north-east or east, which gives it the front.
The south-east is the kitchen's preferred corner, and in an east-facing plan it is also on the front side. The master bedroom goes in the south-west, at the rear, and toilets suit the north-west, west-north-west or east-south-east.
Keep the centre open, and place the staircase in the south-west, south or west, at the back of the plan. Windows are traditionally larger on the east and north-east.
If a room does not match
These need no building work.
- Keep the entrance well lit and clear, and make sure the nameplate is visible.
- Keep the north-east corner open and free of heavy furniture.
- Move the stove to the south-east of the kitchen, and cook facing east.
- Add larger windows or keep existing east windows clear of boxes and heavy curtains.
- Ask a qualified architect and the local authority before any structural change.
