Main door Vastu: which direction suits your entrance
Traditionally, the main door is best placed in the north, north-east or east, with west acceptable and south, south-east and south-west avoided. Where the door sits along its side of the house matters too, and so does its everyday condition. Traditions differ in detail, so treat this as a guide to what most texts say.

Which direction is best for a main door?
Most texts prefer an entrance in the north, north-east (Ishanya) or east (Purva). West (Paschima) is usually described as acceptable. The south, south-east (Agneya) and south-west (Nairutya) are traditionally avoided for the main door.
A house faces the direction its main entrance opens to. The facing on its own does not make a house good or bad. Room placement and the entrance's position along its side carry more weight in the texts.
| Direction | Tradition says | Note |
|---|---|---|
| North | Preferred | Favour the end nearer north-east |
| North-east | Preferred | Often described as the most favoured corner |
| East | Preferred | Favour the end nearer north-east |
| West | Acceptable | Keep away from the south-west end |
| South | Avoided | Check which part of the side the door takes |
| South-east | Avoided | Look at the plan with a practitioner |
| South-west | Avoided | Look at the plan with a practitioner |
Where should the door go in a north or east facing house?
For a north-facing house, the north side is preferred, and the end nearest the north-east corner is the one practitioners usually favour. For an east-facing house, the east side is preferred in the same way, again leaning towards the north-east end and away from the south-east end.
A west-facing entrance is described as acceptable, so it helps to keep the door away from the south-west end of that side. A south-facing entrance sits in a direction the rule data lists as avoided, so many practitioners look closely at which part of the south side the door takes.
Why does the door's position along the side matter?
The position matters because texts divide each side of a house into parts, called padas, and prefer some parts over others. Two doors on the same side can therefore be judged differently.
This is the detail a plan check often surfaces. If the door sits in a less favoured part of its side, a practitioner can tell you which part your plan falls in.
What everyday points matter for any entrance?
The quality of the entrance matters as much as its direction in most guidance, and these points apply to every facing.
- Keep the approach and the doorway well lit, day and night.
- Keep the area clear of shoes, bins, boxes and broken items.
- Hang the door so it opens inward and swings fully, without catching on a wall or furniture.
- Keep the nameplate visible and in good repair.
If a room does not match
These need no building work.
- Light the entrance well and remove clutter, which is a change you can make today.
- Fit the door so it opens inward and fully, if the hinges allow it.
- Place a clear, readable nameplate at the entrance.
- Keep the doorway tidy and clean, and leave the door itself in its present position.
- Ask a qualified architect and the local authority before moving a door, since that is a structural change.

Which direction is best for a main door?
Most texts prefer the north, north-east or east for a main door, and generally describe the west as acceptable. The south, south-east and south-west are traditionally avoided. Traditions differ, so the position along the side and the condition of the entrance matter too. A plan check is more useful than a single rule.
Is a south-facing main door always bad?
No, a south-facing door is not judged on direction alone, though south is listed among the traditionally avoided directions for an entrance. Many texts give weight to the part of the south side the door takes and to how the rooms are arranged. Traditions differ, so look at the whole plan.
Should the main door open inward?
Common practice suggests the main door opens inward and fully, which is also easier for daily use. Traditions differ, and this is a preference and not a rule. Check clearance for furniture and shoe racks, and make sure the door does not catch on a wall.
Can I change my main door to a better direction?
Moving a door is a structural change, so ask a qualified architect or engineer and your local authority first. Traditions differ on how much a door's direction matters. Meanwhile, try the non-structural fixes: light the entrance well, clear clutter, keep the nameplate visible and leave the door itself in place.
