Vastu for a flat: how to apply it in an apartment

In an apartment, Vastu applies to your own flat only: its facing comes from the main door, and you can judge only the rooms inside. Shared staircases, lifts and the building's shape are outside your control. Focus on the kitchen, main bedroom, toilets and entrance, and let the rest go.

How do I find my flat's facing and check it?

Stand at your main door, looking out, and read the compass direction you face. A home faces the direction its main entrance opens to, so that is your flat's facing, even if the building itself faces another way.

Facing alone does not make a flat good or bad. Where the rooms sit and where the entrance falls along that side matter more.

What can I control in a flat?

You control furniture, the stove position, the bedroom layout, light and clutter. You cannot move a shared staircase, the lift shaft or the plumbing stacks, and the texts were written for independent houses.

Practitioners usually suggest ignoring shared parts and judging the flat as its own unit.

Which placements should I check first?

Check these first, using the traditional preferences: the kitchen in the south-east (north-west is acceptable), the master bedroom in the south-west, toilets away from the north-east and the centre, and the entrance in the north, north-east or east.

Let go of smaller points such as exact furniture angles or small windows. A flat rarely allows a perfect layout, and a sensible score is realistic.

How do I check a 2, 3 or 4 BHK layout?

In a 2 BHK, the main bedroom and a smaller bedroom usually sit on opposite sides of a living area. Check the main bedroom first, then the kitchen.

In a 3 BHK, a third bedroom often takes a corner that suits children or guests, with the north-west preferred for both. In a 4 BHK, two bathrooms often sit beside bedrooms, so check that neither falls in the north-east or the centre.

These are general patterns, as layouts differ from builder to builder.

If a room does not match

These need no building work.

  • Move the stove or cooking area toward the south-east of the kitchen.
  • Shift heavy furniture and the bed to the south-west side of the bedroom.
  • Keep toilet doors closed and the rooms ventilated.
  • Light and tidy the entrance, even if it cannot be moved.
  • Keep the middle of the flat clear and bright.

Questions

Is Vastu important for flats?

Many people follow Vastu for their own flat as a layout guide, but whether it matters is a matter of belief. The judgement covers only your interior, since the texts were written for independent houses and you cannot move shared parts. Focus on the kitchen, main bedroom, toilets and entrance.

How do I find my flat's main entrance direction?

Stand inside at your main door, facing out, and read the compass direction you face. A flat faces the direction its main entrance opens to, even if the building faces another way. A compass app is a reasonable tool, and the app also reads the entrance from your plan and asks you to confirm North when unsure.

Do shared lifts and staircases count?

Practitioners usually judge only what is inside the flat, because shared lifts and staircases cannot be changed. Traditions differ on this point, so ask someone you trust if you want a second view. Check your own kitchen, main bedroom, toilets and entrance, and use furniture, light and tidiness for anything you can adjust.

Can I check my flat plan online?

Yes. VastuLive reads an uploaded or photographed floor plan, or one you sketch in the app, and reports room by room with the rule and evidence behind each finding. It asks you to confirm rooms and North when it is unsure, and you can export the report as a PDF to share with family or an architect.
